When La Salle College Preparatory’s STEAM Lab was built ten years ago, it was one of the first in the San Gabriel Valley, setting a precedent and standard for STEAM education in the region. As both enrollment and student interest have grown tremendously over the last decade, we launched the Full STEAM Ahead campaign on July 1, 2023, to raise $500,000 to support our efforts to both expand and enhance La Salle STEAM infrastructure and programming for the next generation of future scientists, engineers, and designers. We hope to reach this fundraising goal by June 30, 2024, with your help.
The Full STEAM Ahead campaign seeks to increase the size of this important facility from its original 1,320 square feet to 4,000 square feet, a three-fold increase in laboratory and classroom space. We will also introduce new course offerings in our Innovations and Design Lab and establish an Aerospace Engineering Center. Your support will allow La Salle to expand the footprint of our STEAM Lab, including presentation space for student displays and work products, and purchase equipment vital to the space’s future success. This new equipment will include:
State-of-the-art drones, virtual reality headsets and software, and furniture designed for flexible use.
Two wind tunnels for our new aerospace engineering program to provide students with hands-on experience in aerodynamics, enabling them to test and analyze designs, understand airflow behaviors, and develop innovative solutions essential for aircraft and spacecraft design and optimization.
Two flight simulators to offer students practical training in piloting, aircraft control, and system analysis. They provide a safe, cost-effective environment for students to refine skills, simulate real-world flying scenarios, and enhance aviation expertise.
Design curriculum and software for graphic design, Revit, industrial design, architectural design, product design, and engineering design, all fueling creative and artistic minds.
Additional 3-D printers and laser cutters to expand the already successful STEAM programming taking place at La Salle.
Related to this expansion of our STEAM Lab, the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation was developed and launched two years ago to provide a medical career pathway program for students interested in pursuing careers in the health sciences. When the STEAM Lab is completed, its proximity to the CARLOW Center will allow for considerable cross-collaboration and engagement between these two important programs.

In early 2000, all Christian Brother schools nationwide were asked to start a San Miguel Scholarship Program, providing full-tuition scholarships for students whose family income put them at or below the federal poverty line. In doing so, Christian Brother schools would further embody the mission of their founder, St. John Baptist de la Salle, who was committed to making education accessible for all, especially the poor. Thanks to donors’ support, La Salle College Preparatory fully embraced this charge and enrolled the first freshman cohort of San Miguel Scholars in the fall of 2000. Fast forward twenty-four years and next spring’s Commencement Exercises will mark the 20th graduating class of San Miguel Scholars from La Salle.
With your support, we can keep this endowed San Miguel Scholarship program growing and thriving. Your donation to the San Miguel Scholarship Fund will ensure that money is available now and in the future for students most in need and will ensure the program’s viability.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jon Keates on April 19, 2024, at his home in Altadena, CA. He was 80 years old.
Jon served as the Chief Philanthropic Advisor to the President and Director of Advancement at La Salle College Preparatory from 2012 until his passing. During his tenure, Jon’s visionary leadership ignited extraordinary growth in overall giving, elevating annual contributions from $950,000 to over $2.1 million. His legacy is woven into numerous transformative capital projects, including the most recent $500,000 Full STEAM Ahead campaign and renovation projects to upgrade art studios, biology labs, and Kohorst track and field. Among his most cherished achievements was the establishment of the Dr. Richard Gray Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, which generated over $1.2 million to support San Miguel students. His contributions laid the foundation for many of the institution’s present-day facilities and educational spaces.
Jon’s indelible mark extends beyond La Salle College Preparatory; his previous roles as Senior Associate Dean and VP of Advancement at USC, VP of Institutional Advancement at Occidental College, and VP of Development & External Relations at Claremont McKenna College, among other higher educational institutions reflect a lifetime dedicated to advancing education and philanthropy.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Dages and Bailey, his brother James, his sisters Shelley and Joanne, and his devoted partner, Thanh. A memorial service honoring Jon’s life will take place on May 11, 2024. In tribute to his memory and achievements, we ask that you contribute to the Jon Clarke Keates Scholarship.
In 2002, my world was forever changed when my beloved wife, Sylvia, tragically lost her life in a terrible accident. On that fateful day, I not only lost my life partner, but my son, Blake, also lost his mother. In the midst of this profound grief, I found solace and inspiration in commemorating Sylvia’s memory in a way
that would reflect her love for our family and her passion for the game of golf.
Blake, our son, graduated from La Salle the same year Sylvia passed. He was an active member of the school’s golf team throughout his time at La Salle. Witnessing his dedication and the golf program’s positive impact on his life, I felt compelled to give back to the school that had provided our family with an excellent education and unwavering support during difficult times.
In honor of Sylvia, and as a tribute to the enduring bond between La Salle and our family, I made a heartfelt donation to the school’s golf program. This contribution led to the establishment of the “Sylvia Bernstein Memorial Golf Fund,” a lasting legacy dedicated to supporting the Boys and Girls Golf teams at La Salle College Preparatory. I encourage others to support this endowed fund, which will help support both La Salle golf teams every year.
– Monty Bernstein P’02
Like most Catholic schools, the tuition at La Salle College Preparatory is below what it actually costs to educate a student. For the 2021-2022 school year, the tuition gap was $8,356 per student. La Salle adheres to this tuition pricing as a way to make the school as accessible as possible to all those families who share our religious and educational values. The Annual Fund allows parents, alumni, foundations, grandparents, and friends to offer their philanthropic support in a way that is meaningful to everyone.

The thoughtful support of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends has helped sustain La Salle College Preparatory’s margin of excellence since 1956. The School acknowledges this generosity in a number of important ways.
Gifts to the Annual Fund (defined as unrestricted and restricted gifts made during La Salle’s fiscal year, which falls between July 1 and June 30) are recognized at a range of levels, and the premier annual giving society is the President’s Cabinet, and which includes gifts of $10,000 or more. The President’s Cabinet succeeds the President’s Council (gifts between $5,000 and $9,999) as La Salle’s preeminent annual gift society. Members of the Crystal Circle, President’s Circle, President’s Council, and President’s Cabinet are recognized on a donor wall in prominent display at the School and in the Annual Report. At whatever level you choose to support La Salle on an annual basis, your support is most warmly welcome.

The School also recognizes donors whose cumulative giving exceeds $100,000 (the Bene Merenti Society), those whose cumulative giving is between $50,000-$99,999 (the Buttimer Society), and more.
Each of these donor groups falls under the rubric of the Platinum Circle. All Platinum Circle members are recognized on a donor wall in prominent display at the School and in the Annual Report.
The Platinum Circle
In honor of those donors who have exercised great leadership in the advancement of the Mission and Philosophy of La Salle, which enables the School to carry out the vision of its Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the following groups comprise the Platinum Circle:
The Buttimer Society
Donors whose cumulative lifetime giving falls between $50,000 and $99,999 join the Buttimer Society; named after the first American Superior General of the Christian Brothers – Brother Charles Henry Buttimer, FSC. Like Brother Charles Henry who governed the Institute during the turbulent decade of the Sixties, these donors ensure the financial stability of La Salle.
The Bene Merenti Society
“Bene Merenti” is Latin for “well-deserving.” Donors whose cumulative lifetime giving to La Salle falls between $100,000 and $249,999 are truly well-deserving of our gratitude for their commitment to the School’s Mission.
The Richard Gray Society
Members of the Richard Gray Society are those whose cumulative lifetime giving falls between $250,000 and $499,999 and whose support merits the praise of the entire La Sallian community.
The Brother Desales Society
Members of the Brother Desales are those whose lifetime cumulative giving falls between $500,000 and $999,999 and whose generosity deserves special recognition for their commitment to La Salle’s excellence.
The Founder’s Circle
Members of the Founder’s Circle are those whose lifetime cumulative lifetime giving exceeds $1,000,000 and who have helped provide the foundation for our school’s success.
La Salle recognizes those donors who have restricted their contributions of $1,000.00+ to the School’s Endowment Funds or included La Salle in their estate planning through one of a number of Planned Giving instruments including gift annuities, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts and bequests. These donors are honored as members of the Saint Benilde Society and are recognized on a donor wall in prominent display at the School and in the Annual Report. Similar to the visionary actions of Brother Celestine, the founding principal of La Salle College Preparatory, the support of these individuals will help secure the perpetuity of the Mission and Philosophy of La Salle College Preparatory for generations.
