About Us

Overview

At La Salle College Preparatory, we develop and nurture personal growth through exploration and discovery. We educate and inspire our community of curious and capable students by providing powerful mentorship and instruction to innovate in and out of the classroom.

We offer future-forward STEAM programs, championship-caliber athletic teams, volunteering opportunities for a meaningful day of service, award-winning visual and performing arts programs, and so much more.

We are a private, Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory high school founded on the Lasallian tradition of academic excellence and a community of persons deeply conscious of their responsibilities to each other, which is central to their success.

Heritage & History

La Salle College Preparatory is dedicated to excellent student performance in academics, arts and athletics. Of particular importance is La Salle College Preparatory’s call to carry out the Mission established by its founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, “to give a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor.” Lancer athletics, student life, visual and performing arts, honors and service societies, student clubs and organizations, and student television broadcasts and publication provide a healthy and warm community atmosphere for all La Salle students.

Opened his first school in Reims, his birthplace in northeastern France, in 1679.

He was convinced that without Christian schools some poor children would be lost both to the Church and to civil society. His initial efforts led him to organize the teachers whose services he had secured into a religious community called the Brothers of the Christian Schools. de La Salle inspired these teachers with the following principle: “You should therefore have a great tenderness towards them and supply their spiritual needs to the best of your ability, looking upon these children as members of Jesus Christ and as his much-loved ones” (Meditation for the feast of St. Nicholas). Over a period of thirty years, he opened schools in several French cities and towns and worked with numerous teachers and students from various socio-economic levels. By the time of his death, he had founded different types of educational institutions: primary schools, teacher training centers, boarding schools, and homes for delinquents.

Alert to the needs of his time, he was an innovator in the development of teacher training programs and in curricular and pedagogical practices. Teachers ranked with servants in seventeenth-century France. de La Salle, however, recognized that teachers stand in a providential and grace-filled relationship to children. Because of the special dignity of this calling, he provided teachers with extensive pedagogical preparation and ongoing supervision. In consultation with his teachers, de La Salle designed a curriculum and wrote practical and effective textbooks infused with gospel values. de La Salle was one of the early Catholic proponents of universal education. Although de La Salle’s schools were primarily for the poor, they attracted children from families of different economic backgrounds. However, he tolerated nothing of the social segregation which was the practice of the day. He prescribed uniform management procedures for the classroom instruction of students from different social and academic levels.

de La Salle regarded a school as a community of believers working cooperatively to achieve a shared vision. de La Salle envisioned teachers as ministers of grace who exercise their vocation daily by instructing youth in the principles of the gospel as well as in the various academic and vocational subjects. His teachers thus helped young people to commit themselves to the teachings of the gospel, to develop loyalty to the Catholic Church, and to prepare themselves for productive citizenship.

de La Salle was a prolific writer and his educational ideas are embodied in several major works: Rule of the Brothers of the Christian schools, Meditations for the Time of Retreat, and the Conduct of Schools, as well as in the textbooks he wrote for students. His contributions to Catholic education led Pope Pius XII in 1950 to proclaim him the Patron of Teachers.

Nearly 80,000 students in more than 80 countries worldwide receive their education in Lasallian Schools

These schools differ greatly in terms of clientele, curriculum and methodology as well as in social and cultural conditions. These schools are unified in the Lasallian heritage.

Lasallian spirituality is rooted in de La Salle’s “double contemplation” of our aspiration to be with God for eternity and the challenge faced by the poor and marginalized to achieve that end. Thus, Lasallian spirituality is:

  • rooted in the school as an instrument of Divine Grace
  • focused on the relationship between the teacher and the student
  • inspired by the salvific potential of a human and Christian education

In harmony with Lasallian Spirituality, three essential characteristics form the core of the Lasallian School:

  1. Teaching viewed as a ministry of grace;
  2. Association, that is, the achievement of the school’s goals through the collaborative efforts of teachers sharing the same vision and values of the gospel;
  3. The effective management of the schools so as to achieve the intellectual, cultural, religious, and vocational formation of the students through a curriculum suited to their needs and based on Christian values.

La Salle College Preparatory was founded in 1956 at the request of His Eminence James Francis Cardinal McIntyre to the San Francisco District of the Brothers of the Christian Schools for construction and operation of a Catholic boys high school to serve the northern and eastern sections of the San Gabriel Valley. Today, La Salle College Preparatory continues to function as a private Catholic, co-educational, college preparatory high school. It is a Lasallian School – an educational institution that draws its philosophy and inspiration from the Christian Brothers whose reputation for excellence in education extends back to 1680. The Christian Brothers, assisted by more than 84,000 lay colleagues worldwide, educate nearly one million students in 80 countries. These schools serve nearly every ethnic group and religion around the world. In addition to providing strong academics, each Lasallian school creates a community of persons deeply conscious of their responsibilities to each other, which is central to their success.

La Salle THROUGH TIME

1955-1956

Construction of the Main Building

La Salle College Preparatory opens its doors in September with Brother Celestine Cormier, FSC, as the first principal. Brother Celestine indicated that at La Salle “We intend to give your son an integrated education which has a purposeful direction worked into it…our educational plan calls for an orientation in which God is the center.” The new La Salle Catholic High School opened September 11, 1956 with 117 ninth grade students from fourteen nearby communities. The present school building would eventually accommodate 400 students, adding a class each year until the full high school program was offered. On November 10, 1956 La Salle College Preparatory was blessed by Bishop Alden J. Bell. Future plans for the school included a combination auditorium-gymnasium, an additional classroom wing, and additions to the Brothers’ residence. A track, baseball diamond and football field were also under construction at this time.

1957

Mark of Distinction

La Salle’s first freshman class (now sophomores) achieved the distinction of winning the freshman division of the statewide Christian Brothers Academic Association. Now in its second year of operation, La Salle sponsored three basketball teams, two baseball teams, a track team and a tennis team with over 70 percent of the student body participating.

1958

Athletics Strive Forward

Athletic Facilities at La Salle continued to expand with the completion of the track curbing which encircles the athletic field. La Salle is formerly accepted into the Olympic League of the California Interscholastic Federation and began official competition in basketball, baseball, track, and tennis during the 1958-1959 school year.

1959-1960

Construction of the Gym

Construction of the Auditorium-Gymnasium begins. It would include a regulation playing floor, bleacher seating for 750, stage, music room, student council room, showers, and offices. The building would complete La Salle’s approved expansion program allowing the school to accommodate 600 boys. La Salle becomes a four-year institution with the enrollment of 120 freshmen boys in the fall of 1959 bringing the student body to 400 members. Jim Dirmann ’60 becomes the School’s first Student Body President.

Perry K. Martin, M.Ed. – School President

Hello and Welcome!

At La Salle College Preparatory, we have been educating students in the greater Pasadena area to Learn, Serve, and Lead for over 65 years. The roots of that unique tradition stretch back more than 340 years to our founder, St. John Baptist de la Salle, and the Christian Schools he created with his fellow educators in France.

De la Salle set a clear mission for his schools: they were to provide a spiritual and human education to the youth, with a particular emphasis on the economically poor. We continue that mission today and strive to develop and nurture conscientious, relational, innovative, and community-focused individuals who exhibit Lasallian values in all that they do. We are committed to providing an environment that allows all students to explore their passions, take risks, and discover pathways to excellence. Specifically, we offer 24 Advance Placement courses, giving even the most academically gifted students ample opportunity to push themselves and be challenged. Our college preparatory classes range from forensic science to introduction to law, and digital game design, ensuring that we allow our students to discover, grow, and learn about themselves, the world, and the challenges ahead.

But learning does not only take place in the classroom. It takes place on the field, the court, the stage, behind the camera, and in the lab. We are proud of our co-curricular programs that challenge our students to hone and develop expertise while also applying what they learn in the classroom to real-life situations and becoming explorers, innovators, and change-makers. For some students, that means debating public policy with speech and debate, creating a robot in our STEAM program, or traveling throughout the nation and world representing La Salle as part of our Academic Decathlon team. For others, that means competing as part of our championship athletic program or performing with our music, theatre, or dance programs. All of our students have the opportunity to find and pursue their passion while they are here.

Our new Centers of Innovation, including our CARLOW Center of Medical Innovation, Center for Cinematic Arts, Center for Global Perspectives, and Center for Linguistic Exploration, sit at the cutting edge of student experiential learning. These Centers have been strategically developed to encourage our students to explore their passions, take calculated risks, and discover pathways to excellence. Each center is also closely aligned with our school’s strategic plan, which places a strong emphasis on nurturing creativity, individuality, and personal growth while providing a diverse and comprehensive education that surpasses the confines of traditional classrooms. They offer opportunities for our students to explore their interests, develop critical skills, and connect their passions to real-world experiences.

A central outcome of our mission is to build an inclusive community that invites all members to feel a profound sense of belonging. We are proud of our co-ed, ethnically and socio-economically diverse environment that reflects our local community and shared world. Our mission calls for us to share our culture, lived experiences, and perspectives with one another to expand our understanding of the world. Dedicated to meaningful service learning at every grade level, we hope to instill in our students a sense of responsibility to advocate for peace and justice in every community they inhabit. Thank you for your consideration of La Salle College Preparatory and our vibrant community of learners and leaders.

Sincerely,

Perry K. Martin, M.Ed.
School President

Dear La Salle Community,

Our Lancer Pride is evident from the moment you step on campus. From our rigorous academic offerings to our liturgical celebrations, our diverse population of students, our championship athletic teams, the creativity of our arts programs, and our Student Life experience, it is easy to see why many of us call this place home.

Here at La Salle, we are not just an educational institution. We are a community of learners bound by the Lasallian Core Principles that guide our every endeavor. Our commitment to the Lasallian mission is unwavering, and it is this mission that serves as the compass for our collective journey. As a community, we reflect daily on the Faith in the Presence of God, Respect for All Persons, Inclusive Community, Quality Education, and Concern for the Poor and Social Justice.

As we embrace these principles, I invite you to join us in fostering an environment where our students can thrive, where their hearts, minds, and spirits are nurtured, and where they are inspired to be the change-makers of tomorrow. Together we are more than just a school; we are a transformative force in the lives of our students and the wider community.

As a graduate of Catholic schools and a parent of Catholic school graduates, I’m very much aware of the value of a faith-based education. Our faculty and staff are committed to the tenets of our namesake, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who regarded a school as a community of believers working cooperatively to achieve a shared vision. We look forward to promoting that vision with our entire Lasallian community: past, present and future.

Please feel free to reach out and say hello.

The Board of Trustees at La Salle College Preparatory govern on behalf of the school’s sponsor, De La Salle Christian Brothers. As a governing board, it does not function as an advisory body and is not involved in the daily operations of the school. The Board’s purpose is to preserve and advance the mission of the school by developing board directives through which the President/CEO works to meet determined goals. The Board uses a system of checks and balances to hold the school and CEO accountable.

Policies are developed and monitored in four key areas:

  • Whom will the school serve, what results are expected for students and at what cost?
  • The boundaries in which the school’s management can operate.
  • The definition of the distinct roles between the Board and the CEO.
  • The nature of how the board will perform its governance role and conduct its business.

All policies flow from the mission of La Salle College Preparatory and in the tradition of the De La Salle Christian Brothers.

The role of the Regents is to promote a culture of philanthropy among all of La Salle’s constituencies. This includes the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individuals and institutions capable of providing meaningful philanthropic support to La Salle College Preparatory. The Regents serve as ambassadors, as hosts of cultivation events, as volunteer solicitors, and as donors who lead by example. The purpose of the Regents is to provide meaningful support and to engage the students, faculty, alumni, parents, and community in providing additional resources to the School.

In their role, Regents:

  • Help strategically position the School in the community;
  • Identify, explore and introduce to the Board any sources of financial support and generally assist with institutional advancement activities;
  • Suggest potential new members for the Board and its committees;
  • Promote the mission, goals, and objectives of La Salle College Preparatory to increase public awareness, understanding, and support of the School.

The Board of Regents may have a maximum of 30 members who serve on one or more of its committees. While the goals of each committee differ, all committees are generally tasked with assisting the President in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of current and prospective donors from various constituencies including alumni, parents, foundations, corporations, and friends of the School.

Executive Committee

Composed of the President, the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of Regents, the Director of Institutional Advancement, and all standing Committee Chairs, the Executive Committee facilitates the work of the Board of Regents, reviews the goals of all standing committees for recommendation to the Board prior to the first meeting of the fiscal year, periodically evaluates progress toward the successful implementation of each committee’s annual goals, and reviews and approves Board agendas in advance of each meeting.

Board Development Committee

Composed of a Chair and others as may be helpful in achieving the committee’s ends, the Community Relations Committee focuses on engaging the community, including parents of alumni, with La Salle College Preparatory to provide the Board, President and the Director of Institutional Advancement with personal contacts within the community who can assist the School in advancing its mission and interests.

Financial Development Committee

Composed of a Chair and the chairpersons of the following fundraising initiatives: Grandparents, Alumni, Parent Pledge Program, Golf Tournament, and Crystal Ball, the Financial Development Committee assists the School’s fundraising efforts by providing oversight for fundraising endeavors. On a project-by-project basis the chairpersons of these various revenue sources may use the Board of Regents as a “think tank”, a source of counsel and/or a pool from which to source volunteers. The Director of Institutional Advancement provides staff support for the work of this Committee.

Marketing Committee

Composed of a Chair and others as may be helpful in achieving the committee’s ends, the Marketing Committee assesses and makes recommendations with respect to La Salle’s strategic positioning, consistent branding, and effective communication strategies to ensure the School presents itself to its best advantage and is worthy of philanthropy.

Mission Support Committee

The Mission Support Committee provides feedback to the Board of Trustees, the Board of Regents, and the President, on educational/ cultural “product” enhancement to ensure the School’s worthiness of philanthropy. The Committee plans and administers the annual Mission Effectiveness Workshop.

Steering Committee
