Develop Your Unique Creativity!

La Salle College Preparatory is known throughout the San Gabriel Valley for having one of the most comprehensive Visual and Performing Arts programs available to students.

We have the unique offering of a Dedicated Arts Study.

This study is for those wanting to learn a discipline in more depth; it allows students to study their area of interest, as well as participate in other areas of the Arts, and other school activities.

Beyond the in depth study, at La Salle College Preparatory, all students participate in the Arts. Each student takes 15 units of Visual and Performing Arts for graduation.

Most students find the Arts are not just a requirement, but a discovery of talents often previously unrecognized, and a challenge to develop a new aspect of themselves.

Our Arts programs provide students with authentic learning experiences that engage their minds, hearts, and bodies, and nurtures the development of cognitive, social, and personal competencies that benefit them now and into adulthood.

“The truest expression of a people is in its dance and in its music. Bodies never lie.” -Agnes De Mille

Whether a novice or an accomplished dancer in training, the La Salle College Preparatory Four Year course of study in DANCE is designed to teach the fundamentals of Dance. Students gain an introduction to modern, cultural, and contemporary dance forms. Students further develop their technique through increased complexity in class combinations, musical phrasing and choreography (based on level). Classwork and discussions center on dance vocabulary, kinesiology dance history, the cultural aspects and importance of dance, current events and choreography. All students perform in the annual fall and spring dance concert and choreography project. Classes also emphasize creative problem solving, divergent thinking skills and cooperation.

The music curriculum at La Salle College Preparatory offers all students the opportunity to study music beginning with music fundamentals to advanced harmony. Student musicians perform in large and small ensembles (instrumental and vocal) and study beginning music technology. Each ensemble performs in public concerts at least two times a year, including fall concerts in December and Spring Concerts which feature all ensembles. Please see the Performance Calendar for more information.

In Vocal Music, all students participate in Concert Choir or Advanced Choir.

In Instrumental Music, students participate in String Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Advanced Band, Introduction to Instrumental Music, and Drumline. In addition to these performance ensembles, each serious music student may enroll in music theory and History of Western Music.

La Salle College Preparatory has sent many of its graduates to the finest colleges, universities and conservatories in the United States, often with scholarships.

“Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.”

–Lyndon Johnson, on signing into existence the National Endowment on the Arts

Everyone has a story to tell. This UC approved series of classes, which are part of the 4-year study of digital film production encourages students to explore and practice in all fields of filmmaking and production. Students will learn how to tell great stories, establish strong characters and find their voice through the art of filmmaking. Students will discover the importance of planning, elements of design and composition, screenwriting, project and time management, non-linear editing, lighting, production design, innovative sound design, graphics and animation, and will ensure the development of critical thinking skills while exercising their creativity. Four-year film students will prepare a portfolio of work for college review in their junior year, ensuring a body of quality work for the higher education application process.

Lancer Television (LTV) is a closed-circuit news broadcast created by and for La Salle students. LTV provides students with the most up-to-date news and announcements and showcases student work including short films, design, and other visual arts performances.

The La Salle College Preparatory Theatre Department is comprised of students in theatre courses as well as students involved in the department’s production and activities. La Salle Theatre produces three major productions each year – a fall play, a winter play and a spring musical. Any student who is academically eligible can audition for these productions or participate on a technical crew.
Student involvement may include acting, musical accompaniment, stage and costume design, lighting crew, sound crew, stage crew, advertising and promotion, ticket sales, and other behind-the-scenes activities.
In addition to these productions, students participate in DTASC (Drama Teachers Association of California) competition in the fall semester. We seek to be an inclusive, creative, and collaborative department where artistic and personal growth are our highest goals.

“Aeschylus and Plato are remembered today long after the triumphs of Imperial Athens are gone. Dante outlived the ambitions of thirteenth-century Florence. Goethe stands serenely above the politics of Germany, and I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over cities, we too will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.”

-John F. Kennedy-

The Visual Arts Department at La Salle College Preparatory provides our students with the skills they need to express themselves while gaining an understanding of the world around them. Our students explore various media, all with a focus on developing their critical thinking skills and integrating real-world concepts.

We offer a diverse curriculum that includes: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Ceramics, Printmaking, 2D and 3D Design, and AP Studio Art. Our classes reach beyond the classroom with field trips, visiting artists and exhibition opportunities. And we prepare our students for the future by assisting in building their portfolios for college, serving our community in our chapter of The National Art Honor Society, and participating in national competitions.
